On Morne Bruce, a one-of-a-kind cannon continues to symbolically protect the people of Roseau, the capital of the Dominica located on the Caribbean Sea shore.
From this privileged observation point, the gaze travels from Woodbridge Bay, the port in which MSC cruise ships contribute to creating a pleasant holiday panorama, to the botanical gardens unfolding at the foot of the mountain itself.
Roseau, the most important and oldest settlement of the island, was a French outpost founded in the 16th century on the banks of the Roseau River. It is rich in atmosphere and French colonial style, and its original urban layout can still be seen in the Old Market area. Possible excursions into the surrounding hills are infinite; just choose the one that intrigues you the most. The greatest of them all is a six-hour or so ascent in hot and humid weather to the boiling lake.
But there are also less demanding hikes, such as an excursion to the crater at the top of Morne aux Diables; as well easy treks, such as a walk to a refuge in Jaco Flats built by runaway slaves followed by a bath in one of the numerous coves near Paradise Bar, where the walk begins and ends. Another spectacle is the twin Trafalgar Falls located just 20 minutes away from Roseau. Here, a brief walk will take you from the visitor centre to an observation platform.
The more intrepid visitor can take a refreshing bath in the lake at the base of the smallest of the waterfalls; the less adventurous can relax in the hot pools just short of reaching the foot of the two falls. Another excursion not to miss out on is the one that will take you to Emerald Pool. A cave in the centre of the island framed by a fairy-tale scene that has been featured in many films and served as the setting for weddings.
